An NIE, or Número de Identificación de Extranjeros, is your identification number in Spain as a foreigner. It’s essential for carrying out nearly any legal or financial activity in Spain, such as buying property, purchasing a car, setting up utilities like electricity or internet, and more.
How do you get an NIE?
The process has become more streamlined compared to 20 years ago, but it can still be time-consuming. You’ll need to complete an application, gather your documents, pay a fee, and schedule an appointment at the police station. For a hassle-free experience, the easiest option is to grant Power of Attorney (POA) to your lawyer. They can navigate the system, handle waiting lists, and often fast-track your application.
