Costa del Sol Breaks Tourism Records in 2024

The Costa del Sol has officially recorded its best year in tourism history, welcoming 14.4 million visitors in 2024. According to data from Turismo Costa del Sol, the increase in visitor numbers also led to a record-breaking economic impact, with tourists spending €21.2 billion throughout the year.

A Surge in International Visitors

One of the key drivers of this record-breaking year has been the rise in international tourism. The United Kingdom remains the largest source market, with 1.18 million British visitors, representing a 7.2% increase compared to 2023. Other European markets also showed strong growth, with notable increases in tourists from Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Ireland.

A significant rise in visitors from the United States has been recorded, with American tourists increasing by 26.1%. Improved flight connectivity between Málaga and major US cities has played a crucial role in this growth, making it easier for American travelers to visit the Costa del Sol.

A Decline in Domestic Tourism

While international arrivals soared, there was a 7.5% decrease in Spanish tourists visiting the Costa del Sol. Turismo Costa del Sol is already working on strategies to attract more domestic travelers in the coming year, as they remain a vital part of the region’s tourism industry.

Growth in Accommodation and Spending

With more visitors arriving, the region has also seen an expansion in hotel and tourist accommodation availability, with an increase of 13.5% in available beds. The rise in visitor numbers also led to a boost in tourism-related employment, with more jobs created in the hospitality and service sectors.

Tourists in 2024 spent an average of €110 per person per day, contributing to the highest recorded tourism revenue for the Costa del Sol. This increase in spending highlights the region’s appeal not only as a sun-and-sea destination but also for its cultural, gastronomic, and luxury tourism offerings.

Challenges and Outlook for 2025

Despite the positive results, tourism officials remain cautious about potential challenges ahead. Global economic shifts, changing travel trends, and external factors such as inflation and geopolitical events could influence visitor numbers in 2025. However, the Costa del Sol’s ongoing investment in infrastructure, connectivity, and tourism experiences puts it in a strong position to maintain its appeal to both domestic and international markets.

As 2025 begins, the Costa del Sol remains one of Europe’s top holiday destinations, continuing to attract visitors with its unique blend of climate, culture, and hospitality.
