Can I Drive in Spain with My Existing License?

,

This week on Two-Minute Tuesday, we’re answering a practical question for anyone planning a move to Spain or spending extended time here:
Can you drive in Spain using your existing driving license?

The answer depends on where your license was issued:

🇪🇺 If You Have an EU Driving License

Good news! You can drive legally in Spain using your valid EU license without needing to exchange it. Just make sure your license is up to date and you’re ready to go.

🌎 If You’re From Outside the EU

For drivers from countries like the USA, Canada, and others outside the EU, you can legally drive in Spain for up to six months using your current license.
After that, you’ll need to:

  • Take the Spanish driving test (theory and practical — both in Spanish),
  • And exchange your license for a Spanish one — unless your country has a specific agreement with Spain.

🇬🇧 British Drivers – Here’s the Good News

Thanks to a recent agreement between the UK and Spain, British citizens can:

  • Drive on their UK license for 6 months,
  • Then exchange it for a Spanish license without needing to take the Spanish driving test.
A big relief for many expats!
